Our Team

The Nitrogen Fund and assocaiated portfolios are managed by the Nitrogen Fund Managers’ investment team. Rowan, the founder of Nitrogen Fund Managers, is the Chief Investment Officer and has overall responsibility for the portfolios, including responsibility for the long term book and the short term trading books. Waldo is responsible for equity research, trade analysis and execution. Rowan and Waldo are supported by David Oberholzer, Willem Oldewage and Petri du Plessis. David is responsible for equity research and Petri heads up operations and treasury for the Funds. In addition, the firm utilises the services of 3 part time software engineers to assist it with the maintenance and ongoing development of its proprietary trading and portfolio management systems.

Rowan Williams

BSc (Hons) MPhil (Cantab), CFA – Chief Investment Officer
Rowan has over 20 years investing experience in the South African market including involvement in listed equities, private equity, derivatives, portfolio management and IPO’s. He currently manages the equity hedge fund portfolios on behalf of Nitrogen Fund Managers. Prior to this he managed a close-end private equity fund on behalf of Nitrogen Fund Managers. He has an in-depth knowledge of the financial markets having completed the CFA designation in 2000. He has specific industry knowledge in the areas of financial services and information technology having been a director and worked with a number of companies in these industries.
Prior to his co-founding i capital in 1998, Rowan was a Senior Consultant within the strategy discipline in the South African office of Gemini Consulting, a leading international management consultancy. Rowan has a master of Philosophy (Land Economy) degree from Cambridge University, where he studied as a Cambridge Livingstone Trust Scholar, and a BSc Honours (with distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is also a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He also appears regularly on radio and TV where he comments on the JSE and various companies listed on JSE.

Waldo du Plessis

BComm (Hons), CFA – Senior Analyst
Waldo joined the Nitrogen investment team in 2017 as a junior fund manager and senior analyst, responsible for fundamental equity analysis, investment implementation and trade execution. Waldo has 6 years’ worth of experience as an investment professional in the hedge fund industry. Prior to joining Nitrogen Fund Managers, Waldo was a junior portfolio manager at a niche real asset based hedge fund, based in Johannesburg. Waldo completed his Bcomm Honours degree in Investment Management at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He is also a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

MComm (Investment Management) – Junior Analyst
David joined the Nitrogen investment team in 2017 as a junior analyst, responsible for fundamental equity analysis. David completed his MComm degree in Investment Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). David is a CFA Level III candidate sitting for the June 2019 exam.

Petri du Plessis

BComm (Hons) CA(SA) – Operations Manager
Petri is the operations manager, responsible for operations, administrative support and treasury management for the funds. He has completed his B Comm Honours degree in Accounting at the University of Pretoria and is a qualified CA(SA). Prior to joining Nitrogen Petri completed his articles at EY and was seconded to the US afterwards. Petri is a CFA candidate and successfully completed the Level 2 exam in June 2018.

Willem Oldewage

BComm Hons (Investment Management) – Junior Analyst
Willem joined the Nitrogen investment team in 2018 as a junior analyst, responsible for fundamental equity analysis as well as operational support. Willem completed his BComm Honours degree in Investment Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Willem is a CFA candidate and successfully completed the Level 1 exam in December 2017.
